Motorcycles have been around for more than ten decades. During this time, motorcycle engines have developed through tweaking and reworking items to get the best performance. There have been more than one dozen engines, but some never met with success. Cost efficiency and customer satisfaction brought failure to a number of motorcycle engines.
All motorcycle engines are fueled by gasoline. To best understand engine types, it is important to understand how an engine works.
A pole called a rod cranks inside the engine and creates a draft that pulls both gasoline and air into a chamber called the cylinder. Inside the cylinder, a piston and rod quickly move up to push the gasoline and air into a smaller space where it meets the spark plug. The spark plug produces a spark between its two metal pieces.
Once the spark plug gives off a spark, the gasoline and air explode. This pushes the piston down, which in turn drives the belt or chain. This action is called torque. The movement of the belt or chain causes the rear wheel of the motorcycle to revolve. A motorcycle's performance is determined by how many cylinders are inside the engine and how they are arranged.
Single cylinder engine:
A single cylinder engine has one cylinder and one piston. Single cylinder engines are used in all off road motorcycles. The single cylinder provides a lot of torque, but also a load of vibration. The vibration is loud and one of the qualities that dirt bike race fans crave during a race.
Twin cylinder engine:
Logically, twin cylinder engines have two cylinders. The cylinders are placed together at an angle. Usually the cylinders are positioned at a 90 degree angle, but there are exclusions to that standard. A twin cylinder engine produces more power because there is more torque and more fuel used. Twin cylinder engines do not vibrate as much as a single cylinder engine.
Now, as stated above, there are exceptions. The boxed or boxer design finds cylinders placed side by side. This produces even less vibration, but adds a new issue. The cylinders tend to jut out the side of the bike, which makes it hard to take sharp corners. Another issue is the tremendous heat that the cylinders project; it makes leg protection a necessary evil.
Triple Cylinder Engines
A three cylinder engine finds the cylinders included in a head. This type of engine offers a load of power, but it also requires more parts. Each cylinder requires an additional fuel injector and carburetor. The more cylinders included on an engine, the higher the engine RPM. More RPM means more power. Triumph makes motorcycles using three cylinders and boy can they fly!
Four Cylinder Engines
The four cylinder engine is just like the three cylinder engine only it has the additional cylinder and therefore weighs more. As is true of any engine, more cylinders equal more power and smoother sailing.
It is important to consider how much size and power you require in your motorcycle. If you are taking your bike off road, you need a bike with plenty of torque and a low rpm to make it up hills and quickly navigate corners. For off roading, stick with a single cylinder. A double cylinder is your second choice.
If your main purpose for riding a motorcycle is riding through traffic and along roads, do not purchase a bike with less than a twin cylinder engine, although a three or four cylinder engine is a better idea.

There is also half chaps which just cover the bottom half of the leg. These are mostly worn in the hot summer months. You can get stylish with fringe and conchos. And you can even get them with patches already sewn on, to make a statement.
Whatever your style is, when riding a motorcycle they are essential for your protection. Chaps help protect your legs from the cold and wind, from the heat of the sun, from flying debris and from hot pipes. They also give you added protection from abrasions and scrapes in case you take a spill. And yes, chaps should be leather because leather gives you more protection, versatility and comfort than other materials. They are easy to maintain, just like you would a leather motorcycle jacket. Federal Laws state that no warranty can be voided by verbal instruction only, it must be in writing.
First of all no dealer will ever do this because legally they know they can't. If however they did then according to the Magnuson-Moss Act you are entitled to their branded oil for free. Keep that in mind the next time your dealer tries to force you into using their brand of oil.

You won't get an honorary degree in Mechanical Engineering by mastering these technicalities of chain tensile strength but you will be a significantly more competent buyer when you are picking out a chain for your bike or quad. Plus, you will save yourself some bucks in the process. Today's marketplace offers a wide variety of chain grades based on metallurgy, physical design of the components (pins, bushings, bearings, and rollers) and techniques of construction/assembly. All these factors contribute to the overall durability of the chain and its capacity to perform its job of reliably transferring power from the engine to the wheel(s) under some pretty adverse conditions. It's unrealistic to try to compare all these individual engineering details between the brands of chain you are considering. Going through that kind of technical analysis would get you a degree in engineering. The simplest way to evaluate the overall performance and suitability of different chains is to compare their Tensile Strength ratings. This one simple number is a true measure of any chains expected life, durability and performance
Tensile Strength…What it is an how it's measured
Tensile Strength (calculated in pounds or kilograms) is the maximum, sustained load the chain can withstand before undergoing permanent deformation, elongation or STRETCH. The way T.S. is measured is simple: Capture the chain to be tested on opposite ends and exert an increasing, pulling effort while measuring the force and determining the point at which the chain deforms permanently. The force (in pounds or kilos) applied at that point is the chains Tensile Strength. By comparison, the tensile strength of bubble gum is almost zero. The tensile of a solid bar of titanium could be higher than 350,000 pounds. The T.S. for a typical motorcycle/ATV chain ranges from 3,000 pounds up to 17,000 pounds. This tensile number doesn't tell you everything but it is the most important indicator you can use when comparing chains or selecting the best chain to use use for your Bike/ATV.
Let's bust a myth and popular misconception about tensile strength right now. Some think that because a chain's tensile strength is rated in pounds that a higher number will mean the chain is heavier and weighs more. This is FALSE. A 7,000 pound T.S. chain could weigh more than a 12,000 pound tensile strength chain. Typically the lower tensile strength chains use heavier mild steel in their construction where higher tensile strength chains employ lighter materials such as chromoly.
Tensile Strength…What's in it for you?
You may have already noticed that the higher the tensile strength rating of a chain, the progressively higher price tag it carries. That has to do with the costs of the component raw materials used in the chain, the manufacturing costs, heat-treating processes, the price of a barrel of Arabian crude oil, etc., etc., etc. The real question is…
"Why should you pay for a higher Tensile Strength chain?"
Here are the Main Benefits of Higher T.S.….The useful life of any chain directly relates to the tensile strength number. The higher the number, the longer the chain will last, under the same conditions.
The higher the tensile rating, the less the chain will stretch and consequently, the less maintenance required to adjust out the resulting slack.
The greater the tensile strength the more ability the chain has to resist damage caused by shock loads imposed by hi-impact events in the drive train such as dumping the clutch at 12,000 rpm….landing full power-on from a triple…operating the drive system with excessive chain slack or loose sprocket bolts.
Here is the most overlooked, hidden benefit of high tensile: If you ride off-road, the eventual day will come when a rock of just the right size and shape finds its way in between a chain roller and a sprocket tooth. The higher the chains' tensile, the better your odds that the rock loses the contest and gets pulverized. You won't even know it happened. A lower tensile chain has a greater probability of losing the battle to the rock and the cthe chain breaks apart.
So….What should you buy?
The three charts below present my M.R.T.S. (Minimum Recommended Tensile Strength) based on engine displacement and type of machine. The real questions you should be asking yourself………..and answer…..…are.........

Acceleration And Breaking - First And Most Important Element In Riding By: faye bautista
There's nothing like the feeling you get when you're on your favorite road with a familiar bike. You flow through corners as if on a rail, senses peaked, adrenaline raging uncontrollably throughout your body. When it's done right, it's almost as though everything is moving in slow motion.
You've done it dozens of times before; coming into the corner hard on the brakes. You feel the rear tire slide and skip slightly to the side as you approach the corner. You ease off the brake as you push the opposite grip, forcing the bike to lean into the turn, with your knee sticking out as if it were a wing. You continue to slow until you reach full lean and approach the apex, covering the brake and looking deep into the turn.
Then you see it. From the corner of your eye you see what appears to be a rabbit running towards the road. In an instant your mind calculates paths between you and the rabbit, and you realize they will intersect. You've already committed to the corner, and you know if you remain on your present line you'll hit the rabbit. You also know that at that speed and lean angle, hitting even the smallest of animals will greatly upset the bike and likely result in a crash for you.
What happens next has many variables. Some were determined before you ever entered the corner; others will be determined by what you do next. Motorcycling can be an absolutely great sport, but it can also be frighteningly dangerous if you get into a situation like the one described above without the proper skills or preparation.
Your riding skills are something to be mastered through practice, patience, and as you will (hopefully) soon find out, common sense and natural reaction. These skills should be honed into a natural reaction by those of us who weren't born with them.
The first and most important element of riding is acceleration and braking. They involve (and are largely dependant on) several other elements including dynamics and physics, grip, and sudden inputs. These elements are mastered only with practice and are the foundation for nearly every other element.
Braking is probably the single most important element used in controlling your bike in an emergency. When done correctly, it can produce several Gs of stopping power, easily lifting the rear wheel completely off the ground and flipping the bike over completely if you have the grip. The front tire of a street bike is responsible for 70% to 90% of braking power under normal or semi-hard braking, and up to 100% in emergency or stunting situations. The only exceptions to this are in low traction conditions such as wet, dirty or oily roads, or while at high lean angles.
Under low traction conditions, the front brake can be extremely dangerous and should be used with extreme care, or not at all. When the brakes are applied (either front or rear), weight is transferred to the front of the bike. If traction conditions are less than favorable, front braking will load the front tire which will result in a skid and likely a crash.
Braking while leaning over in a corner will cause the bike to either stand up, changing your line drastically, or a loss of traction causing the bike to wash out from under you. Which is often called a low-side. Be sure to allow yourself enough extra grip and lean angle reserved (not used) in case you need to get hard on the brakes in a turn. It's not a good idea to EVER go into a corner at max speed unless you're on a race track. You need to have an out in case of emergency, like a rabbit running into your path. Changing course mid corner in a split second requires at least a small amount of reserve lean angle and/or braking ability. Going in at 100% doesn't leave you any wiggle room.
Get to know your brakes and your accelerator. They can be your best friend if you get to know them well or your worst enemy if you don't understand them.

Then you see it. From the corner of your eye you see what appears to be a rabbit running towards the road. In an instant your mind calculates paths between you and the rabbit, and you realize they will intersect. You've already committed to the corner, and you know if you remain on your present line you'll hit the rabbit. You also know that at that speed and lean angle, hitting even the smallest of animals will greatly upset the bike and likely result in a crash for you.
What happens next has many variables. Some were determined before you ever entered the corner; others will be determined by what you do next. Motorcycling can be an absolutely great sport, but it can also be frighteningly dangerous if you get into a situation like the one described above without the proper skills or preparation.
Your riding skills are something to be mastered through practice, patience, and as you will (hopefully) soon find out, common sense and natural reaction. These skills should be honed into a natural reaction by those of us who weren't born with them.
The first and most important element of riding is acceleration and braking. They involve (and are largely dependant on) several other elements including dynamics and physics, grip, and sudden inputs. These elements are mastered only with practice and are the foundation for nearly every other element.
Braking is probably the single most important element used in controlling your bike in an emergency. When done correctly, it can produce several Gs of stopping power, easily lifting the rear wheel completely off the ground and flipping the bike over completely if you have the grip. The front tire of a street bike is responsible for 70% to 90% of braking power under normal or semi-hard braking, and up to 100% in emergency or stunting situations. The only exceptions to this are in low traction conditions such as wet, dirty or oily roads, or while at high lean angles.
Under low traction conditions, the front brake can be extremely dangerous and should be used with extreme care, or not at all. When the brakes are applied (either front or rear), weight is transferred to the front of the bike. If traction conditions are less than favorable, front braking will load the front tire which will result in a skid and likely a crash.
Braking while leaning over in a corner will cause the bike to either stand up, changing your line drastically, or a loss of traction causing the bike to wash out from under you. Which is often called a low-side. Be sure to allow yourself enough extra grip and lean angle reserved (not used) in case you need to get hard on the brakes in a turn. It's not a good idea to EVER go into a corner at max speed unless you're on a race track. You need to have an out in case of emergency, like a rabbit running into your path. Changing course mid corner in a split second requires at least a small amount of reserve lean angle and/or braking ability. Going in at 100% doesn't leave you any wiggle room.
Get to know your brakes and your accelerator. They can be your best friend if you get to know them well or your worst enemy if you don't understand them.
